Penalty rates under the Homecare award. What you need to know.

Understanding the awards is a difficult undertaking for most people. If you are paying staff under the 'Home Care award' (See link to abridged version below) or are basing pay on this award, you will understand that penalty rates can be difficult to understand and can be very costly when receiving limited funds. One of the things that isn't widely known is that some of the penalty rates can be based on the base rate for that award and not the actual rate. This means you can be paying someone a much higher hourly rate than the award, but when calculating the penalty rate, it can be calculated on the much lower minimum rate.
Always remember though, keeping good staff usually means that paying at least a comparible rate of pay is a necessity. If other organisations are paying more, then your staff member may choose to work elsewhere.
